In a universe
of incomprehensible scale, it is both awe-inspiring and reassuring to know that
the Creator of all, the Universal
Father, desires an intimate, personal relationship with you. Far
from being a distant cosmic power, God is a loving Father, intimately
involved in your inner life. The
Urantia Book gives us profound insights into how we can know God
personally and deepen that eternal bond.
The Father’s Personal Love for You
The starting point in building a relationship with God is
understanding that He loves you as an individual. You are not merely one
among many—you are unique and irreplaceable in all eternity.
“The love of the Father absolutely individualizes each
personality as a unique child of the Universal Father, a child without
duplicate in infinity, a will creature irreplaceable in all eternity” (12:7.9,
138.4).
This divine love does not depend on your worthiness. The
Father already knows your weaknesses and yet chooses to love, guide, and
indwell you. It is a relationship rooted not in merit but in eternal value.
God Lives Within You
One of the most astounding truths revealed in The Urantia
Book is that God has planted within you a fragment of Himself—known as the
Thought Adjuster. This divine presence is your most personal link to God.
“Even though the Paradise Father functions through his divine
creators... he also enjoys the most intimate inner contact with you... that
mysterious communion of the Father fragment with the human soul and with the
mortal mind of its actual indwelling” (12:7.13, 139.2).
This indwelling Adjuster silently works to spiritualize your
mind and lead your soul toward God. Strengthening your relationship with God
begins by recognizing and responding to this inner divine guide.
Jesus Taught Us a Personal Religion
Jesus came
not to promote a religion of dogma or rituals, but to awaken the heart to a
personal relationship with the Father.
“I have come among you to proclaim a greater truth... that
God loves you—every one of you—as individuals... Now have I come to give you a
personal religion” (145:2.4, 1629.5).
This personal religion is built not on public ceremony but on
private fellowship—what Jesus referred to as the kingdom of heaven within
you (cf. Luke 17:21). It is through this intimate personal experience that
your spiritual growth unfolds.
Ways to Strengthen Your Relationship with God
Here are foundational practices from The Urantia Book
that nurture your connection with the Father:
a. Personal Prayer and Worship
Prayer is more than words—it is a spiritual experience
of loyalty, courage, and communion.
“Jesus never prayed as a religious duty. To him prayer was a
sincere expression of spiritual attitude... a consecration of impulse... a
validation of consecration... the mighty mobilization of the combined soul
powers” (196:0.10, 2088.5).
To pray is to open your heart, surrender your will, and align
your purpose with God’s. Worship, on the other hand, is the soul's purest
expression of love, awe, and trust in the Father.
b. Spiritual Meditation and Stillness
Spiritual maturity grows in the soil of stillness. Meditative
communion with the indwelling spirit creates space for the Father to speak to
your soul.
“The secret... was this consciousness of the presence of God;
and he attained it by intelligent prayer and sincere worship—unbroken communion
with God” (196:0.10, 2088.5).
Create daily moments of inner quiet where your soul can
receive divine impressions.
c. Living According to God’s Will
The most reliable evidence of a living relationship with God
is seen in your choices and actions.
“The will of God... becomes increasingly discernible in the
spirit fruits which are borne in the lives of the spirit-led children of God”
(12:7.7, 138.2).
Choosing truth, showing mercy, practicing love—these are the
fruits of fellowship with the Father. Each decision to align with God’s will
strengthens your bond with Him.
Faith: The Vital Link
Faith is the living link that unites your soul with the
Father’s spirit. Jesus trusted God like a child trusts a loving parent, and The Urantia Book
urges us to develop the same trust.
“You who have been called out of darkness into the light are
expected to believe with a whole heart; your faith shall dominate the combined
attitudes of body, mind, and spirit” (155:6.17, 1733.5).
Even the faintest flicker of sincere faith draws God closer,
but wholehearted trust builds a bond that transforms your life.
A Relationship That Transcends Time
This relationship is not for this life alone—it is eternal.
The Father has given Himself to you now, so that you may give yourself to Him
forever.
“You will yield to God an affection analogous to that given
by a child to an earthly parent; for... the Universal Father loves and forever
seeks the welfare of his created sons and daughters” (2:5.9, 40.1).
This divine friendship continues beyond the mortal realm,
through the morontia worlds and into Paradise itself.
Final Reflection
You are never alone. God is
not watching you from afar; He is within you—guiding, loving, and
calling you to fellowship. To strengthen this sacred relationship:
- Recognize
the divine presence in you.
- Commune
daily in prayer and worship.
- Live
by the spirit and bear its fruits.
- Trust
God with a whole heart.
“The Lord is near all who call upon him in sincerity and in
truth” (131:2.9, 1445.3).
Let this relationship become the centre of our service to our fellows!
