From ancient stargazers to modern physicists, humanity has
long asked: Are we alone in the vastness of the cosmos? The
Urantia Book answers this question with a resounding “No” but in a
context that transcends both astronomy and theology.
According to this revelatory text, our world, Urantia, is but one tiny speck in a grand and living universe teeming with life, governed by divine order, and guided toward eternal destiny.
This article explores the framework of the Seven
Superuniverses as presented in The Urantia Book,
unpacking what it means to be a part of this unimaginable creation and the
implications for our spiritual understanding of companionship in the cosmos.
The Architecture of the Master Universe
The universe is not a chaotic accident. It is a vast,
purposeful creation organized into a central, eternal core, Havona, surrounded
by seven evolutionary superuniverses, and beyond them, unformed and forming
regions known as the outer space levels (12:1.4–1.9, 129.2–129.7).
The seven superuniverses are massive sectors of time-space
reality, each governed by a specific set of spiritual and administrative
principles. These superuniverses revolve around Paradise, the eternal dwelling
place of the Universal Father and the divine nucleus of all reality. Our world
belongs to Orvonton, the seventh superuniverse, and is part of a local
universe called Nebadon.
Each superuniverse is further subdivided into major sectors,
minor sectors, local universes, constellations, and systems, all perfectly
administered by ascending orders of divine beings and celestial personalities
(15:2.6–2.8, 166.5–166.7). The total number of potentially inhabitable worlds
in the grand universe exceeds seven trillion (15:2.9, 166.8).
The Spiritual Significance of Cosmic Companionship
From a spiritual standpoint, we are not just not alone,
we are intimately interconnected.
The Urantia Book assures us that God is not only aware of
each inhabited world, but lovingly upholds it as if it were the only world in
existence:
“Your planet is a member of an enormous cosmos; you belong to a well-nigh
infinite family of worlds, but your sphere is just as precisely administered
and just as lovingly fostered as if it were the only inhabited world in all
existence” (15:14.9, 183.1).
The presence of life on billions of worlds is not random, it
is part of a divinely orchestrated plan for evolutionary progression,
intellectual growth, and spiritual ascension. These worlds are “schools” in the
universal curriculum that leads mortals from animal origin to Paradise
perfection.
Each superuniverse expresses a unique aspect of cosmic
evolution. Orvonton, our superuniverse, is known as the theatre of mercy,
patience, and love, a universe where divine justice is always balanced with
compassion (15:14.2, 182.1).
Who Are Our Cosmic Neighbours?
Our cosmic neighbours are not just imagined beings; they are
literal, spiritual, and intelligent personalities, existing across a spectrum
of material, morontial, and spiritual realities. They range from the mortal
types of diverse evolutionary planets, to celestial ministers, to personalities
of the Paradise Deities.
Each local universe, such as Nebadon (headed by a Creator
Son, Christ Michael—Jesus of Nazareth), is the developmental ground for
ascending mortals and a field of service for descending divine beings (15:2.5,
166.4). Our spiritual neighbours include other mortals on ascending paths,
angelic hosts, ministering spirits, and administrative beings who all cooperate
in fulfilling the divine purpose.
Beyond the Seven: The Outer Space Levels
If the seven superuniverses represent the present “grand
universe,” what lies beyond?
The Urantia Book introduces the concept of Outer Space
Levels—vast regions beyond the seven superuniverses where new cosmic
activities are underway (12:1.14–1.15, 129.12–130.1). These zones are believed
to be staging grounds for future creations, involving force organizations and
potential future personalities. Some speculate that these areas may one day be
home to absonite or even existential beings—those transcending time and space.
Though uninhabited by current mortals, these realms suggest
an eternal unfolding of the divine plan. There is no final edge to the
universe; instead, there are layers of infinity waiting to be
experienced by ascending creatures.
Cosmic Purpose and the Supreme
Central to understanding our place in the cosmos is
recognizing that the universes are evolving toward the realization of the Supreme Being, the
personalization of experiential Deity (15:14.3, 182.2). Each of the seven
superuniverses contributes a unique “purpose” to this evolution, with Orvonton
bringing all six together into a unified expression.
The final goal? That mortals and all other beings become
perfected, and that one day the Supreme Being may reign from Uversa, the
capital of Orvonton, over a fully actualized grand universe.
So, Are We Alone?
Not only are we not alone, but we are essential
participants in a divine and eternal enterprise. The isolation of Urantia
is temporary and educational, not existential. Our journey through life and
beyond is part of an immense process designed to lead us into fellowship with
beings from across time and space, culminating in the presence of the Universal
Father.
Through spiritual insight, we can perceive that the same hand
that guides the galaxies also touches our hearts. The universe is friendly. It
is intelligent. And most of all, it is inhabited by children of God, just like
us.
Final Thought
Let the realization of cosmic companionship fuel your
spiritual courage. In a universe of trillions of worlds, you are not forgotten.
Rather, you are called, called to grow, to serve, to love, and to ascend.
“And so, when you once start out to find God, that is the conclusive proof that God has already found you” (195:6.16, 2078.2)).
