In our quest for a purposeful life, idleness and laziness
stand as formidable barriers to personal growth and the collective upliftment
of society. As The
Urantia Book reminds us, “Real religion does not foster moral indolence
and spiritual laziness by encouraging the vain hope of having all the virtues
of a noble character bestowed upon one as a result of passing through the
portals of natural death” (103:5:7 (1134.5)).
This insight resonates deeply with UraServe’s mission, where every
moment is valued as an opportunity to serve others and transform lives.
Human progress has always depended on action rather than
inaction. On more cultured worlds, “gone are the idleness and friction of the
earlier primitive ages” (55:5:2 (629.11)), underscoring that growth is achieved
when energy is channelled into meaningful endeavours.
Yet, some early religious practices reverted to ideals that
encouraged idleness (69:2:5 (773.6)), tolerating inactivity even when universal
freedom should be celebrated (69:8:11 (780.2)). In fact, primitive communism
“put a premium on inactivity and idleness, stifling industry and destroying
ambition” (69:9:2 (780.5)).
No society can progress when idleness is permitted, or
poverty tolerated (71:3:8 (803.8)). Modern governance increasingly expresses “a
new form of social disgust—disgust for both idleness and unearned wealth”
(72:5:12 (814.2)). Even in personal relationships, the call to reject
indifference is strong; one teaching challenges us: “Will modern woman respond
to this great achievement of social liberation with idleness, indifference,
barrenness, and infidelity?” (84:5:10 (937.7)).
At UraServe, our vision is built on active, purposeful
service. We reject idleness by engaging in projects such as providing
education, clean water, renewable energy, and spiritual guidance. As a teaching
reminds us, “idleness is destructive of self-respect; therefore, admonish your
brethren ever to keep busy at their chosen tasks” (159:3:4 (1765.6)).
Moreover, the Master’s words warn against improvidence
(165:4:7 (1822.2)) and affirm that “life in the Father’s eternal creation is
not an endless rest of idleness... but rather a ceaseless progression in grace,
truth, and glory” (181:1:2 (1953.4)).
By embracing action over inaction, we honour our time and our
sacred duty to serve, transform lives, and build a better world.
