In a world full of questions—about purpose, justice,
suffering, and hope—one question rises above the rest: What is God really
like? The
Urantia Book offers one of the most compelling, complete, and loving
portrayals of the Divine ever revealed to humanity. Far beyond dogma, it
introduces us to a God who is both infinitely vast and intimately near.
But how does understanding the nature of God impact your
life, your choices, and your destiny?
God Is a Person: The Universal Father
“The Universal Father is the God of all creation, the First
Source and Center of all things and beings.” (The Urantia Book, 1:0.1)
First and foremost, The Urantia Book affirms that God
is a person, not a vague energy or an impersonal force. He is the Universal Father, the
First Source and Center of all things and beings (1:0.1). He possesses will,
purpose, emotion, and thought. He knows you, loves you, and relates to you
personally.
Because God is personal, He can be known, loved, and
experienced. This transforms spirituality from a ritual into a relationship.
God Is Love: The Core of His Nature
“God is love; therefore, his only personal attitude toward
the affairs of the universe is always a reaction of divine affection.” (The
Urantia Book, 2:5.1).
The foundational truth about God, repeated again and again
throughout The Urantia Book, is this: God is love (2:5.1). Not
just loving—but the source of love itself. His love is unconditional,
patient, intelligent, and tireless. It seeks the best for every being.
This love doesn't need to be earned. It’s freely given, like
the sun that shines on both the just and the unjust. For you, this means that you
are always loved, even when you fail, even when you doubt.
God Is Spirit: Always Present, Always Near
“God is a universal spirit; God is the universal person.”
(The Urantia Book, 1:3.5).
Although God is personal, He is not bound by matter or space.
“He is all-prevailing, bountiful, omnipresent, and infinitely kind.” (131:4:3 ). He is closer than your breath, dwelling
within you as a Thought
Adjuster, a fragment of His own divine presence.
This spiritual nature means God is with you always—not in a
far-off heaven but within your soul. He is your inner guide, whispering the way
forward, gently leading you toward truth, beauty, and goodness.
God Is Truth, Beauty, and Goodness
“The goodness of God is found only in the spiritual world of
personal religious experience.” (The Urantia Book, 2:6.1).
God’s character is not only loving and personal—it is also
supremely good, true, and beautiful. He is the source of
all moral law,
the standard of all wisdom, and the essence of all harmony. In every sunrise,
every act of kindness, every noble sacrifice—you are glimpsing the nature of
God.
This gives your life a higher compass. You were not born just
to survive. You were born to reflect God’s nature through your thoughts,
your actions, and your relationships.
God Is Just and Merciful
Many wrestle with the idea of divine justice—how can God be
fair and still merciful? The Urantia Book explains that God’s justice
is always tempered by mercy, because His justice flows from love, not
wrath.
“God is never wrathful, vengeful, or angry.” (The Urantia
Book, 2:6.7). The creatures of the realms are the recipients of the divine
justice which is tempered by mercy.
His justice is not about punishment, but about restoration,
correction, and growth. Even divine discipline is a loving act aimed at helping
you grow into the fullness of your destiny.
What This Means for You
Understanding the nature of God isn't just theology—it’s
transformation. Here's what it means for your life:
- You
are deeply loved,
always and forever.
- You
are not alone—God
is with you, in you, and for you.
- You
have a purpose—to
become like God, to live a life of love, service, truth, and joy.
- You
are part of a family—all people are your spiritual siblings.
- You
are eternally significant—your soul matters in the vast universe.
The Invitation of a Lifetime
The greatest revelation of God’s nature was through Jesus of
Nazareth, who called God “our Father” and lived in constant, loving
communion with Him.
“God is your Father, and religion—my gospel—is nothing more
nor less than the believing recognition of the truth that you are his son.” (The
Urantia Book, 193:0.3)
So, what does it mean for you?
It means you are invited. Invited into a journey of
discovery, of transformation, of divine intimacy. To walk daily with a God who
loves you more than you can imagine, and who is shaping you into something far
more glorious than you can see.
